Trail 715

Trail 715 is a moderate out-and-back trail from Monument to Palmer Lake. It can be done all at once, separately by upper and lower portions, or as a combination with other trails in the area

The lower portion of the trail starts in the Monument Fire Center off Schilling Avenue. The trail climbs steadily for about mile and a half through open space filled with scrub oak. Next two miles it follows Mt.Herman road as it turns around south slope of Mt.Herman. Another trailhead with parking is available where the trail crosses the road and heads north to the upper portion of the trail.

The trail continues through the forest as you climb up the saddle before descending down. After about a mile you enter the Limbaugh Canyon. This pleasant canyon is about 2 miles long with aspens, rock formations and minimal elevation change. About 3/4 into the canyon a side trail connects Trail 715 with Palmer Lake Reservoir trails.

Distance: 3.5 miles from the Fire Center to Mt.Herman Road crossing. 3.6 miles from the crossing to the Palmer Lake overlook at the end of the canyon.

Difficulty Rating:

Directions: From downtown Monument take 2nd Street west and then turn left on Mitchell Road. Drive 0.6 miles and then turn right on Mt.Herman Road. For the upper portion trailhead continue on Mt.Herman for additional 4.5 miles. The trailhead parking is just up the road from Mt.Herman trailhead. This is a rough dirt road and high clearance car is recommended although not required.
