Spruce Mountain is a flat top mesa in Douglas County just north of Palmer Lake. It's the main feature of the Spruce Mountain Open Space. Trails are open to hikers, horseback riders, mountain bikers and pets on leash.
The main trail climbs up from the parking lot for about 1.2 miles through few switchbacks. Once you reach the upper loop you can enjoy leisurely hike on the mostly flat top. The loop is 2.3 miles long, traversing through a mix of forest and meadows with a rewarding view of Pikes Peak's north face at the end. On a clear day Rocky Mountains are visibile to the northwest.
To create a slightly longer and more diverse loop you can descent via the rugged Service Road and traverse the north side of the mesa via the Eagle Pass Trail.
Difficulty: The initial climb of the main trail is moderately steep. The Service Road approach is even steeper but the loop on the top is easy.
Directions: Drive north on I-25, take exit 163 and drive west on County Line Rd. Right after crossing railroad tracks turn right on Spruce Mountain Rd. Drive for 3.5 miles and then park at trail head on your left.
